Monica Relph
| Monica’s rowing career has been one of consistent progression, to an
international-class performer, since taking up the sport in 2005. Her physical potential for rowing was identified by the Amateur Rowing Association’s ‘World Class Start’ (WCS) programme in 2005. Until this point, Monica had never so much as sat in a rowing boat, her sporting and physical exploits limited to club rugby, football and performing dance. At 6ft in height and with an arm span of 188 cm, Monica had the physical potential required of a top-class oarsman, but as a (then) 17 year old, she would be starting in rowing at a comparatively late age, with many other athletes against whom she would be competing, starting rowing as early as aged 10. However with intensive training (both technical and physical) and her own dedication and commitment to the opportunity offered by WCS, Monica had early success, winning a bronze medal in the Quadruple Sculls at the Junior National Championships in 2006. Pamela Relph
| Pamela is a new member of the GB Rowing Team Adaptive Squad and has been selected to compete in one of two LTAMix4+ boats at the first World Cup of 2011 in Munich. Until recently Pamela was on an army scholarship which saw her attend the Defence Sixth Form College Welbeck with a view to joining the Royal Engineers as an engineering officer. When this career path was cut short due to her disability, Pamela saw an opportunity in adaptive rowing which has quickly become her main focus. She was first introduced to the world of rowing in August 2010 by her older sister Monica who has rowed internationally for GB, and she has progressed well, taking 2nd place at the British Indoor Rowing Championships in November 2010 and finishing 4th at the European Indoor Rowing Championships in January this year. Pamela enjoys participating in many other sports including basketball and rugby, and loves traveling - especially when it gives her the opportunity to surf or ski. Whilst at Birmingham University she captained the University's award-winning cheerleading squad the Birmingham Pussycats. Outside sport, she enjoys going to the cinema, reading, spending time with friends and eating out. She hopes to work with animals in the future. Click here for Pamela's British Rowing page |
